Former General Making Waves for Cardinals

sweetAlex Sweet, the 2008 Washington and Lee graduate who won All-America swimming honors last year, is back in the pool and in the headlines.Alex is in his first year of medical school at the University of Louisville and is swimming for the nationally ranked Cardinals. He was was the subject of a feature story in the Louisville Courier Journal this week. Not only did the story discuss Alex’s exploits in the pool but it also included a brief Q and A about his first cadaver. The Cardinals are ranked 13th in the nation, which is the highest ranking that team has ever had. There’s an interesting tidbit in the Courier Journal story about Alex swimming his lifetime best (19.09 seconds) on the anchor leg of the Louisville 200 medley relay team against rival University of Kentucky. And it happens that Alex’s father was once a swimmer for — the University of Kentucky. A year ago Alex was getting ready to lead the Generals to an eighth-place finish in the NCAA Division III championships where he won the national title in the 50-yard freestyle. He went on to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials where he finished 64th out of 113 in the 50 free.
