W&L Boasts Six Academic All-Americans

washingtonandleegeneralsCongratulations to six Washington and Lee athletes who have been selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District III teams. Remarkably, no fewer than five General football players were named to the 20-member first team. They join senior soccer forward Anne Van Devender as All-District winners. Those six will now be eligible for national honors later this year. The football honorees are seniors Billy Murray of Louisville (business administration, 3.44 gpa), Tommy Matteo of Worcester, Pa. (business administration, 3.52 gpa) , and Scott Russell of Mendham, N.J. (business administration, 3.53 gpa), junior Gus Cavanaugh of Alexandria, Va. (English, 3.42 gpa) and sophomore Greg Kurkis of Roswell, Ga. (undeclared, 3.93 gpa). Van Devender is a computer science major with a 3.84 gpa. The minimum grade point average for nominees was increased this year from 3.20 to 3.30. W&L has had 47 Academic All-Americans since the program began in 1975.
