Athletic Scholarships for the NCAA’s Division III?

There is an important story in the current edition of Inside Higher Education, the online news source for higher education. Although a debate over whether or not to split Division III into two parts seemed to have gone away after a vote to create a Division IV failed last spring, a recent survey shows there remains significant differences in the way the schools in the division want to proceed. That survey showed that 82 percent of the membership support keeping the division together, there was one remarkable finding: almost two-thirds of the surveyed schools suggested that awarding financial aid for “leadership in athletics” ought to be considered. That is diametrically opposed to the key principles on which Division III were created in the first place so it will be interesting to watch how this plays out going forward. Here’s the full article on Inside Higher Ed. It’s worth a look.
